A good mastering can be everything from a subtle enhancement to a massive gain in loudness, imaging and depth, but either way what a mastering engineer does has to be perfectly appropriate. Mastering for audiovisual media is not only a job that needs sophisticated technical knowledge and skills. It is a job that needs a great amount of intuition and experience as well, to meet the style and intention of the mix – and to match the needs of artist, producer and label at the same time.
Though the loudness war is over, we still like loud masters, if the are dynamically alive and technically free of digital clipping and ISP (Inter-Sample-Peaking). Our unique multiple oversampling M/S limiter processing chain guarantees fat, but 100% clipping free master tracks with a general safety headroom of 0.4 dB for poor MP3-Encoding and all those cheap DA-converter designs that reside in portable media players these days. As broadcasting stations always apply their own automatic program limiters to avoid volume jumps between tracks, our masters will sound just fine here, while masters that tried to beat the last drop of loudness out of the material will sound flat and unpleasant on radio.
